3rd defendant pleads guilty in illegal pot growing scheme

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) – A third defendant involved in a large-scale illegal marijuana growing operation inside a converted mill building in Rhode Island has pleaded guilty.

Federal prosecutors say 54-year-old Irwan Anwar pleaded guilty Tuesday to conspiracy to manufacture 100 or more marijuana plants, manufacturing more than 100 marijuana plants, and using or maintaining a drug premises.

Anwar was one of three people charged after federal, state and local law enforcement officers raided the Providence mill in August 2015. The building had been sub-divided into numerous units. Police found 550 marijuana plants on one of those units and 252 pot plants in another.

The two other defendants have previously pleaded guilty.

Anwar faces sentencing Jan. 19.
