Strange Rhode Island: The HF Payton Shipwreck Remains in Jamestown, RI

Untitled-1

The legendary shipwreck of the schooner H.F. Payton sank in 1859 of the coast of Jamestown.

On the ship were enormous, ornate granite blocks en route to New England that were lost at sea – until the hurricane of 1938.

During this incredible storm, dozens of blocks were hurled onto the shoreline, but still remain difficult to find even after almost a century.

630WPRO.COM’s Patrick Austin sits down with StrangeNE.com editor Michael Girard to talk about the history behind the granite blocks, the legend of the shipwreck – and what he discovered when he took matters into his own hands and went exploring in Beavertail.
